What is a Blog?

A blog (a contraction of the term "web log")[1] is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order.

Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability of readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (Art blog), photographs (photoblog), videos (Video blogging), music (MP3 blog), and audio (podcasting). Microblogging is another type of blogging, featuring very short posts.

As of December 2007, blog search engine Technorati was tracking more than 112,000,000 blogs

Types

There are many different types of blogs, differing not only in the type of content, but also in the way that content is delivered or written.

Personal blogs

The personal blog, an ongoing diary or commentary by an individual, is the traditional, most common blog. Personal bloggers usually take pride in their blog posts, even if their blog is never read. Blogs often become more than a way to just communicate; they become a way to reflect on life, or works of art. Blogging can have a sentimental quality.

Few personal blogs rise to fame and the mainstream, but some personal blogs quickly garner an extensive following. One type of personal blog, referred to as a microblog, is extremely detailed and seeks to capture a moment in time. Some sites, such as Twitter, allow bloggers to share thoughts and feelings instantaneously with friends and family, and are much faster than emailing or writing.

Corporate and organizational blogs

A blog can be private, as in most cases, or it can be for business purposes. Blogs used internally to enhance the communication and culture in a corporation or externally for marketing, branding or public relations purposes are called corporate blogs.

10 practical ways to use a blog

The blogging platform is just a tool. How you use a tool depends on how creative you can be! Here I share 10 very practical ways in which people can use blogs!

1. Personal Weblog

That’s the original use of blogs. Start a blog in 5 minutes, and then start venting all your frustrations, pouring your complaints about your next door neighbour, the weather, start scolding your boss e.t.c.

2. Professional Interest Blog

If you have a particular interest in a certain area, like for example, trekking or photography or skiing, consider starting a Professional Interest Blog where you log your daily thoughts about the area of interest. Soon, what you will find is a repository of knowledge which can be so valuable to share with people of the same interests. You might even want to take it further to recommend products to take some load off your pockets.

3. Website for Your Company

Since blogs have been made so easy to set up and administer – some companies actually use blogs as their company websites! Instead of creating static HTML pages, consider just creating one post for a presupposed “page”. Then, create a menu bar in your blog template to link to the permalink.

Of course, in WordPress, you can always use the “page” feature. :)

4. Online Resume

Blogs can be one of the best online resumes ever. Just imagine how cool 8)it would be if your boss asks you for your resume and then you say “Well, check out my blog at http://yada yada yada. That’s where I log all my professional thoughts and experience”.

By the way, that’s a great way to test if your boss is “online” or “offline”! :mrgreen:If he answers “What’s a blog?”, do direct him my way, and I may have another customer. Sorry, no affiliate URLs for you yet, but dinner is on me. :)

5. Publish A Newsletter

Blogs are a great way to publish newsletters, may it be for your club or company or not-for-profit organisation. Why settle to pay dollars a piece for dull CMYK colors on paper when you can afford to put interactivity and animated graphics delivered instantly online… for almost FREE?

6. A Communication Platform for Companies

That the key for corporate blogs. Its the CEO’s ultimate tool to get in touch with customers direct, and find out what they want, when they want it and how they want it. Remember to enable commenting on your blog.

7. A Brainless Instant Publishing Site to Make Money

Well, at least, this is how I interpret it when I read some of the money making programs online that say you can “make money with blogs on autopilot”. You get your articles from an article repository and then you publish it on your blog. With the use of some very powerful (and scary, if put in the wrong hands) software, you could even do this without a single Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V

If you are doing this, by the way, I’d recommend you add some of your own thoughts, opinions, comments and critique. That will help you quite a lot in making yourself look a little more brainy. :)Your thoughts could also spark some conversation, which will help in your blog.

8. Project Development and Status Announcements

Who says blogs need to be updated frequently? Update these blogs (just like the WordPress development blog) when you have very important things to say to your customers, so that they take each message seriously.

9. Collaboration Project Logs

Working on group projects? Consider using a blog as your “project homepage”. Give access to every group member to post, and announce the blog address. You might even want to use an RSS to Email service to make sure every message gets delivered to every group member.

At the end of the project, that blog will again become a wonderful manual for future reference, or, at least a great piece to show your project supervisor how much effort and pain you guys went through to get your stuff done. Prepare your pitch to get a pay raise too

10. A Chatroom Creator

Well, there are not many blogs like this out there who can do it, but with an authentic voice and interest to communicate, I’d just say its possible. When you start to find your regular posts having over 20 comments, you know you are almost there! I, for one, am frantically trying to be able to achieve such a standard on this blog.

Why Your Company Should Have a Blog

A recent research shows that more people are reading blogs, most internet users expect every company to have a social media presence, and blogs influence customers purchasing decisions. This sounds like very compelling reasons for companies to start blogging or to improve their existing blog!

Sixty percent of Americans use social media, and of those, 59 percent interact with companies on social media Web sites. One in four interacts more than once per week.

According to the survey, 93 percent of social media users believe a company should have a presence in social media, while an overwhelming 85 percent believe a company should not only be present but also interact with its consumers via social media. In fact, 56 percent of users feel both a stronger connection with and better served by companies when they can interact with them in a social media environment.

“The news here is that Americans are eager to deepen their brand relationships through social media,” explains Mike Hollywood, director of new media for Cone, “it isn’t an intrusion into their lives, but rather a welcome channel for discussion.”

One in three online Americans now read blogs at least once a month, while 18% comment on them. Blog readers as a group grew by nearly 50% over this past year. (Quoted from Forrester Research: October 20, 2008).

Blogs influence purchases: One half (50 percent) of blog readers say they find blogs useful for purchase information.

According to the study, blogs factor in to critical stages of the purchase process, weighing most heavily at the actual moment of a purchase decision. When it comes to respondents who said they have trusted blog content for purchase decisions in the past, over half (52 percent) say blogs played a role in the critical moment they decided to move forward with a purchase. (Quoted from BuzzLogic: October 28, 2008)

Quick Summary: What This Means for Companies

For those of us who regularly consume information from blogs, we expect to be able to grab the content of your company’s blog to keep up with news and information relevant to your industry. The research above shows that the number of people who read blogs is growing, and these people expect you to have a blog.

Not only are more people reading blogs, these blogs are influencing purchasing decisions, which is important for every company.

Additional Benefits

Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO is probably one of the biggest advantages of having a corporate blog. Because blog content is updated frequently, blogs have some built-in search engine benefits. The blogging culture also encourages linking to other blogs, which can also improve your rankings in search results.

Thought Leadership. A great blog can position your company and key employees as thought leaders within the industry, which puts your company in a position of greater authority within your industry.

Should Every Company Have a Blog?

Yes and no. The benefits of blogging seem to be fairly clear; however, these benefits are only achieved when the blog is updated regularly with great content. Unfortunately, this can be a significant time commitment. For companies who are not willing to put in the time and effort, it is better not to have a blog than to have a blog that hasn’t been updated in months.

Here are a few things to think about:

  • Can you commit to at least one post per week? (2-3 is better)
  • Do you have people who have interesting things to say and with good writing skills?
  • Is someone available to manage the process and make sure that the blog never gets neglected?

If the answer to any of the above questions is no, this might not be the right time for you to start a corporate blog.

If you are still on the fence, here are a few tricks to help overcome the above hurdles:

  • Start a group blog with several authors to spread the load across more people. With 4 authors, each person could write one post a month to meet the minimum requirement of one post per week. A dozen authors writing 2 posts per month would give you content for a post each business day.
  • Recruit bloggers from the lower ranks of the company who are smart and passionate about the industry. While the CEO might not have hours to spend blogging, someone further down the org chart might be able to carve out a little more time.
  • Manage the blog process by having someone who already manages content for other purposes also pick up management of the blog. A community manager is a good choice for this if you have one.

How To Create a Blog

There are three simple steps involved in blog creation once you enter blogger.com into your browser.

Step #1. Create your google account with your email address and enter continue.

Step #2. Name your blog e.g www.businessinfo2020.blogspot.com It is what enable other people to access your site any where in the world.

Step #3. Choose your template. This is the layout or outlook of your blog. There are many options available to you. Once you follow this last step, blogger.com will create your blog. It is then left for you to post any content you like on your site.

To your success always!

8. NAIONAL SPORTS LOTTERY (NSL) PLC

Last floor, Afri-Investment, Building, Beside Oakland Centre, Maitama –Abuja. Tell: 0803 123 0047 call free with MTN line. www.nslplc.com

Ø NSL PLC is a public quoted company in the Nigeria Stock Exchange. It is a lottery company that operates other lines of businesses such as electronic payments, airtime, payment card management, revenue collection etc.

v NSL PLC is about:

ü Empowering people

ü Creating wealth

ü Employment opportunities

ü Contributing to cashless society

ü Raising funds for good causes like education, sports development etc.

NSL Products include:

v Lottery

Lotto 5 of 90

Lotto 6 of 46

Scratch cards for games

v Airtime

Glo, Mtn, Zain, Etisalat, Starcomms etc

v Payments

Your customers can pay for goods and services at your shop using VISA payment cards, thereby increasing your profits.

HOW THE POS TERMINAL WORKS

All NSL transactions are carried out with a Point Of Sale (POS) terminal. This is the latest technology that is meant to face out plastic scratch cards in the nearest future.

It is a rechargeable machine that does not require electricity, computer, printer, scanner or internet connection. It prints all denominations of recharge vouchers (#100, #200 #400 #500 etc ) on a tarmac roll: your regular ATM paper.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

For you to participate, you have to sign up with the company as an agent. Once you sign up, NSL will allocate a POS terminal to you to start your GSM printing business.

Please note that the terminal is allocated to agents FREE OF CHRGE. It is absolutely free. Don’t pay any money to anybody anywhere for you to collect the terminal.

Once you are willing to become agent to NSL, present yourself at any of the company`s offices and explain your mission to any of the staff. An agent form will be given to you to fill. You are expected to attach 2 passports and a photocopy of your valid identity card. Your forms would be sent to the head office in Lagos for documentation and processing. This normally takes between two to six weeks.

Afterwards, NSL will call you up to the office to collect your machine.

You can earn as much as 15% commission as agent to NSL on every transaction. However, you pay a little Daily Access Charge (DAC) on the terminal and paper. But presently, DAC has not started, so everything is still completely free.

9. J D Kutons Nig Ltd-EVERLASTING SOLUTIONS

7 Ajibade Oke Street, Ajao Estate, Oshodi-Lagos.

Tel: 0809 431 4407. www.everlastingepay.com

One of the greatest challenges in recharge card/voucher business is that there is no way you can print recharge cards of all the networks with one single investment. Even if you could, it is going to be just few networks. Most equipment are only meant for the sole business of voucher printing and nothing more.

But this whole thing is about to end because with as little as N5,000, you can sell the vouchers of all networks and make huge profits from it. Yes! all networks - MTN, ZAIN, GLO, ETISALAT, STARCOMMS, MULTILINKS, VISAFONE etc.

Here is the sweet part of it.

- No Laptop or desktop needed
- No printer
- No papers
- No electricity
- Minimum start up capital of N5,000

How can this be? you might ask. This is made possible by a very portable equipment called Everlasting POS. This device has all the networks listed on it. All you have to do is press the network, the recharge amount and then it starts to print the voucher in a tarma roll that conceals the pins as they are being printed.

The POS has your bank account details which makes it possible to know when you have and do not have money in your account.

Other Applications running on this POS includes:

- DSTV
- Air Time
- JAMB
- PHCN
- WAEC
- NECO
- NYSC POSTING
- MOBILE BANKING

The POS has the platform for payment to all above mentioned bodies.

How to be a part of this

To be a part of this, you need to open an account with at least N5,000.00 with ZENITH BANK. Then you need to buy the POS device. The everlasting POS device is going for N90,000 per device. To remind you, you will be selling the PINS of all networks with a start-up capital of N5,000.00. This is to say since the POS costs N90,000 and a start-up capital of about N5,000, all you need is just N95,000 (minus other logistics) and you would have started your GSM PIN Printing Business.

If you ask me, security is up to 95%. We can have it shipped to you in case you are interested in this new magic.

TO YOUR SUCCESS ALWAYS!
